Warts are unsightly, contagious growths typically found in the skin's outer layer. Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and they tend to appear, disappear and reappear without warning. According to medical experts, HPV enters the body through a cut, scratch or crack in the skin and incubates for six months before erupting into a raised lesion: a wart.
Characteristics
Warts are often raised, rough in texture and grayish in color. Warts can be as small as a pinhead or it can be a large mass. Areas where warts commonly appear are the fingers and hands. Warts can also develop on the face, scalp, bottoms of the feet, as well as the genital and anal areas.
Warts are infectious. They can be passed through direct skin-to-skin contact. The wart-causing HPV can be spread from other areas of the body also through scratching, touching, shaving or nail biting.
Anyone can have warts regardless of age. However, according to experts, people appear to develop an immunity to warts as they advance in years, which is why warts are a lot more common in children than in adults.
Types
The common skin wart is the most prevalent type, typically occurring in children. This wart is flat, smooth and has a yellowish-brown color.
Plantar warts, warts that show up on the soles of the feet, tend to be large (about two inches in diameter) and grow inward, causing extreme discomfort when walking.
Warts appearing in the genital and/or anal areas are contagious. Genital warts used to be quite rare but they are becoming prevalent because they are easily spread through sexual contact. Women with genital warts may pass on the virus to the fetus during pregnancy or birth. /
Treatments
One popular home remedy for removing wart is wrapping the wart in duct tape. This is especially effective on finger warts. It does not leave any scar. Wrap the finger with duct tape and leave it for six and a half days. Remove the duct tape for half a day and wrap the wart again. Repeat until the wart is gone.
Over-the-counter (OTC) topical wart removal medications are effective. However, topical wart removal products should be carefully applied only onto the warts, avoiding the surrounding skin to prevent spreading the virus.
For doctor-supervised wart removal, the chemical cantharidin is applied onto the wart. A wart can also be removed by freezing it (cryotherapy). Liquid nitrogen is applied onto the wart two to four times until the wart is gone. Other methods of removing the wart include burning, cutting or using laser.
Diabetics who have warts, as well as pregnant women with genital warts, should not use home wart removal remedies or even try removing their warts on their own using OTC wart removal products.
