What is HPV?
HPV is the shortened form of human papillomavirus which is most often sexually transmitted disease (STD). Over a hundred different types of virus are considered to be HPV, but most of them result in warts on various parts of the body, most often the genitalia, but also on the feet and elsewhere. Other forms of HPV can lead to cancer of the cervix, anus, mouth, throat, or genitals. HPV infections manifest near the contraction point, which is why this sexually transmitted disease most often affects the sexual organs. HPV Prevention relies upon either abstaining from sexual contact or using safe sex practices such as condoms and remaining monogamous. There is also a new vaccine which might prevent some forms of HPV infection.
What increases risk?
HPV prevention relies upon decreasing one's risk. Those who have many sexual partners have the highest chance of contracting HPV. Unprotected sex with anyone and weaken immune systems also seem to increase the likelihood of HPV. Most diagnosis are made in young women through a PAP smear done by their gynecologist. It is not clear if age or the sexual activity of these young women play a factor in their increased HPV risk. For HPV caused warts in places other than the genitalia - such as the hands or feet - children seem to be most susceptible.
How to prevent HPV
HPV prevention rests upon many lifestyle factors of the individual. There are two main categories of the result of an HPV infection: warts on any part of the body and cancer. When plantar, flat, common, and genital warts arise, the cause is likely HPV. Warts are difficult to prevent, but basic hygiene such as wearing clean, dry socks can help to slow or stop the spread of common, flat, and plantar warts. Those with warts are encouraged to not scratch at the wart or bite one's nails. These actions could spread the HPV from the wart to themouth.
HPV prevention is vital to lowering the chances of contracting genital warts and cancer. The tips given to those at risk are common to many other sexually transmitted diseases. They include the following:
- Become or remain monogamous in sexual relations.
- Decrease the number of sexual partners.
- Use a barrier such as a latex condom during sexual activity. This does not prevent all types of HPV, though.
There is also a new method of HPV prevention. It is the vaccine branded Gardasil which is offered to pre-teen and teenage girls to prevent them from contracting HPV during sexual activity. It is given to young girls ideally before they begin to have sexual contact. The vaccine will only act as HPV prevention for the forms of the virus not already contracted. Contraction of HPV does not always mean that the one infected will manifest symptoms. That is why it is critical to always use a barrier form of protection during sex.
