Genital warts, which are caused by several forms of human papillomavirus (HPV), affect thousands of women each year. HPV is one of the the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the U.S., and it has been estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that more than 50% of both men and women will become infected with at least one of the more than one hundred types of HPV within their lifetimes. HPV has also been linked to cervical cancer and cancer of the vulva, which is why it is important for sexually active women to have a Pap test every twelve months.
Symptoms of Genital Warts in Women
Genital warts are flesh-colored or gray bumps or flat raised lesions. They often appear together in groups and resemble a cauliflower shape. In women, genital warts most often affect the vulva but can also be present near the anus, on the walls of the vagina, and in the cervix. They can be itchy but are rarely painful, though some can cause pain and even bleeding during intercourse because of their location on or in the vagina. Genital warts and HPV are primarily spread by direct contact with infected skin and can be passed to partners through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. If the virus is spread through oral sex, warts can appear in the throat and mouth, on the tongue, and sometimes in the upper respiratory system.
Risks and Complications of Genital Warts and HPV
Not all forms of HPV cause genital warts, and often the types that do cause genital warts produce few or no symptoms. In many cases, the warts are so small or flat they cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Because of this, HPV is often transmitted by people who have no idea they have it, and because it can take from three months to several years for symptoms to develop, it can be very difficult to track down the source. Long gestation times and lack of symptoms make the risk of cervical cancer even more dangerous. Regular Pap tests can detect the presence of abnormal cells in the cervix and women under thirty years old are encouraged to have a Pap test every year starting three years after first becoming sexually active or at age twenty-one, whichever is earliest. After age thirty, women can have a Pap test every three years if they have had three normal tests in a row.
Treatment of Genital Warts and Prevention of HPV
Genital warts can be treated with surgery or creams, but the virus itself cannot be treated. In many women, HPV is cleared from the body by the immune system and goes away on its own, but in some women the virus may never be completely eliminated. HPV can lie dormant in the body's cells and genital warts can recur years after the initial onset; HPV can still be spread to partners even when no symptoms are present.
HPV and genital warts can be prevented by limiting the number of one's sexual partners, being sexually active only within a mutually monogamous relationship, never having unprotected sex, and not having sex when there are visible warts or other signs of HPV in one's self or one's partner. Though condoms prevent the spread of HPV the majority of the time, they are not 100% effective because they do not cover the entire penis or other affected areas of the genitals. It is also now recommended for all girls age twelve and older to get the recently-developed vaccine Gardasil, which protects against the four most common types of HPV that cause genital warts and cervical cancer.
