What are genital warts?
Genital warts appear on the genitalia as lesions. Once a lesion is detected, a biopsy is done by the physician to determine if the cause was the human papillomavirus (HPV). Women diagnosed with HPV induced genital warts should have a Pap test to ensure that their HPV infection has not resulted in cancerous growths in the cervix. Following a diagnosis, the goal of genital warts treatment is to eliminate the warts, but the virus which caused them cannot be eradicated from the body, and future reappearances of genital warts is always a likelihood.
How are genital warts treated?
Most small outbreaks genital warts can be treated with a cream. Over the counter remedies have proven to be ineffective, and in some cases, these can do further damage since they are not intended for use on the softer tissues of the genitalia. Physicians have several prescription creams which are applied topically to the warts. In the event that prescription creams do not work, the lesions are too large, or the patient is unable to use them, surgery is another option.
Different types of topical drugs used
Creams are often used for smaller outbreaks of genital warts. Physicians have several options when offering topical genital warts treatment. Among them are:
- Imiquimod acts to increase the body's own immune reaction to the warts. The boost given to the patient's immune system leads to the disappearance of the warts rather than this drug acting directly upon the lesion.
- Podofilox is not intended for internal use, and the physician is likely to apply the initial treatment, giving the patient strict instructions to which to adhere for future applications. This drug works directly upon the warts to vanquish them.
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is always given by the physician. It chemically dries out the warts and lesions.
Types of surgery used
There are many instances when creams and topical genital warts treatments are not feasible. If the outbreak is large, the lesions are excessive in size, or if a pregnant woman's baby might come in contact with the warts or cream during delivery then a surgical procedure will be the likely treatment option. There are several types of surgery. Each individual's case of genital warts must be carefully evaluated in order to administer the most effective treatment. Among surgical options are the following:
- Surgical excision requires a local anesthetic. The physician literally cuts the warts off with this form of treatment.
- Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart and the skin around it. The body forms a protective blister which will cause the wart to fall off as the blister heals.
- Electrocautery burns off genital warts through the use of an electrical current.
- Laser treatment is often used only as a last resort for lesions in hard to reach places. This is due to its higher cost.
