Condyloma, or genital warts as it is better known, is a sexually transmitted disease which manifests itself as unsightly lesions in the genital region. Condyloma is caused by human papillomavirus, or HPV, which is transmitted via sexual contact or, less commonly, childbirth. Genital warts may appear in both males and females, and both externally and internally, potentially affecting the penis, urethra, outer vagina, cervix and anus.
Symptoms of Condyloma
Genital warts are generally pink or purple in color, and they may be accompanied by an itching or burning sensation and the desire to urinate more frequently than usual. Known as condyloma acuminata, these warts vary in size and often have a cauliflower shape. Due to their appearance and the stigma associated with STDs, the psychological effect of contracting genital warts may be more severe than its physical impact.
Causes of Recurrence of Condyloma
While it is uncertain exactly what causes the warts to reappear, studies have shown that a recurrence is far more likely in individuals whose immune systems are functioning poorly, at which times the lesions may become more numerous, larger and more uncomfortable. Chemotherapy and anti-rejection drugs have also been found to increase the likelihood of a flare-up of genital warts in those infected with HPV.
Treatment of Condyloma
The most commonly prescribed course of treatment for condyloma is a topical preparation. Condylox is one such FDA-approved treatment, with Podocon-25 and Podofin being popular alternatives. While they are generally effective at treating condyloma, they are not suitable for pregnant women as they have been shown to increase the incidence of birth defects.
